In the immense corpus of his more than 550
cembalo Sonatas, Domenico Scarlatti included only 5 pieces that have really the
form of a Fugue. Nothing in comparison with the production of his contemprary
J. S. Bach – what a singular resemblance of the last of them with the last
Fugue of the Well-tempered Clavier’s first book! However, five surprising
works, that the pianist Fabio Grasso presents in this CD in the piano version.
An highly refined and intellectual interpretation, that clearly shows the very
personal counterpoint of Scarlatti, with its great freedom, but also with
fairly complicated ideas, like the strange arpeggio of the so called “Cat’s
Fugue”.
The programme is completed by 9 Sonatas,
that Fabio Grasso groups in macrostructures following Kirkpatrick’s
numeration So he mixes very famous and
less known pieces (like the astonishing wonderful Adagio-Sonata k426),
enriching the flourishing writing through the wide range of colours of the
piano and of his fingers.
